Chris has been bird watching in Hertfordshire for 40 years and is a qualified bird ringer and trainer. He has served on the Herts Bird Club committee and as the Hertfordshire BTO Regional Representative since 1990. He co-ordinates the Hertfordshire contribution to national bird survey work including the BTO/RSPB/JNCC Breeding Bird Survey and has organised many surveys for the Herts Bird Club, including the 2007-12 tetrad breeding season and winter atlases. He is a regular contributor to the annual Bird Report and is co-author of the Breeding Birds of Hertfordshire (1992) and the Birds of Hertfordshire (2015).
His bird ringing activity is primarily with the Rye Meads Ringing Group, the North Thames Gull Group and the Swale Wader Group and he organises regular ringing trips to Lundy. By profession Chris is an IT consultant with a deep interest in the management and presentation of biological data, and has developed several bird atlas websites including the Hertfordshire Bird Atlas (www.hertsatlas.org.uk). Chris currently looks after the Herts Bird Club database, ensuring the efficient processing of records from many sources and the extraction of that data for the writers of the Bird Report, the Hertfordshire Environmental Records Centre and the London Bird Club.
Chris and his wife Mandy currently live in Bishop's Stortford but are soon to move to Devon.
