Calendar of meetings and events organised by local natural history groups for September 2009

Compiled by the Hertfordshire Natural History Society (HNHS) on behalf of natural history organisations in Hertfordshire.

Visitors (non-members) are welcome at all the meetings listed; the notes indicate where a charge or donation is requested.

For field meetings please wear appropriate outdoor clothing and shoes, take field guides and binoculars if you have them.

Wednesday 16 September: WELWYN ‘Birds in Hertfordshire’: talk by Brian Sawford.
Meet at the Civic Centre, Prospect Place, Welwyn [TL232160], T 8.00 pm, £2.

Wednesday 16 September: GOFF’S OAK. ‘My – it's getting hot; why is that?’ a light-hearted look at global warming, by Edward Eastwood (University of Hertfordshire).
Meet at Methodist Church Hall, Newgate Street Road, Goff’s Oak; 8.00-10.15 pm; refreshments available at a small cost. Entrance £2.00.

Friday 18th September, National Moth Night, field meeting to catch and identify moths leader John Hollingdale. Meet at 19.30 at Stanmore Country Park, Dennis Lane lower entrance, Middx, Grid Ref TQ172927. Saturday 19th September, National Moth Night, field meeting to catch and identify Moths, leader Colin Plant. Meet from 18.30 onwards at Broxbourne Woods in the West Car Park, on Pembridge Lane at Grid Reference TL324071. (Lights were turned on at approx 8pm on this date in last 5 years). Directions: From Hoddesdon, in the Lea Valley, take Cock Lane westwards from the small roundabout and cross over the A10 trunk road, around several bends, then round a 90 degree left hand turn by a house, then about half a mile after this turn right into Pembridge Lane. These are narrow country lanes so drive with care. If you reach the village Green at Brickendon you have gone past it! Public Transport First Capital Connect Bayford (approx 1.5 miles along unlit country lanes via Brickendon Green). Monday 21 September: Food Security in the 21st Centuary - Why Britain needs a Plan, lecture by Patrick Holden, Director of UK Soil Association. 7.00 at Tewin memorial Hall, Lower Green, TEWIN, near Welwyn, AL6 0JX. Tuesday 22 September: WELWYN GARDEN CITY. ‘A Chilean encounter’, a talk by Chris Ward on the birds, mammals and landscapes of Chile, from the Atacama Desert to Patagonia.
Meet at the Chapel, The Commons, Welwyn Garden City at 8.00pm, entrance £2 including coffee.
