An exciting report from west Hertfordshire suggests that Scarce Chasers (Libellula fulva) may have established a colony in the county.

Chris Hazell reported the presence of at least six males along a small section of the Grand Union Canal north of Wilstone Village yesterday (3rd July 2016), one of which is shown in the accompanying photograph, and Barry Reed recorded a tandem pair plus a second male in the same area. Successful breeding has not been confirmed, but the presence of so many adults in one area does make it seem likely that they are breeding, and that they may have reached the area at least two years ago.

This species has a two year life cycle so it will be interesting to see if they reappear at Amwell next year after both males and females were seen there in 2015.
