With sadness, we have learned that Pryce Buckle – a former HNHS Treasurer and Secretary as well as county recorder for molluscs – died on 9 November after a prolonged illness.
Pryce was HNHS Treasurer from 1983 to 1988 and then Secretary until 1990. He became molluscs recorder in 1987 and continued in the role until 2010.
Natural history author and former HNHS President Michael Clark recalls him as an enthusiast well-capable of bringing the study of snails to life for the non-expert. He also remembers Pryce as a talented amateur bookbinder. "Pryce was a great Hertfordshire naturalist, did an enormous amount for the Society and was a fine craftsman as well as a meticulous scientist with the microscope," he said.
Our condolences go to his wife Christine who was also an HNHS committee member, serving as Registrar (Membership Secretary) from 1983 to 1992. We thank her warmly for presenting the HNHS with a set of the Society's Transactions from 1939 to 2014 that Pryce bound himself. These will now be added to our bound 'reference' collection.
